The Designated Protected Tree.

This camphor tree used to stand ten-meter tall, but it collapsed in 1961 during the Number 2 Muroto Typhoon. At that time we had to cut the trunk, but we replanted the roots, and a five-branched tree sprouted from the stump, growing into its current shape. Because the tree we can see nowadays looks like a human hand with its five fingers spread, in 1979 Sakai City designated it a protected tree.

The Japanese maple tree was planted in 1994 and it now sheds a refreshing shade over the garden. The new green of early spring and the bright colours of late autumn attract and delight the eyes of passersby.
